Excellence at Conference
Former Secretary of State George P. Shultz will deliver the keynote address at Energy Summit 2007, a major daylong conference on solar power, energy efficiency and clean technology this Friday, June 1, organized by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group and the Stanford University Precourt Institute for Energy Efficiency. Shultz will speak on the topic, "Beyond Kyoto," a reference to an international treaty on climate change goals reached at a 1997 environmental conference in Kyoto, Japan and now embraced by 106 countries.
Also at the conference, hosted by SunPower at Cypress Semiconductor in San Jose, SolarTech, a collaborative industry initiative created by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, will announce the establishment of the Solar Center for Excellence in Silicon Valley, a technical and educational resource focused on regional economic development and cost competitive solutions for the industry and its customers.
The energy summit will examine ways of making Silicon Valley the epicenter for solar energy, energy efficiency and clean energy technology. Energy efficient technologies and practices are fundamental for three important goals -- enhancing the economy, improving national security and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Other speakers and panelists include: Tom Werner, CEO of SunPower, Tom McCalmont, CEO of REgrid Power, Dr. James Sweeney, Director of the Precourt Institute of Energy Efficiency, State Senator Joe Simitian, San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed.
A former U.S. Secretary of State and Secretary of the Treasury, George P. Shultz is the Thomas W. and Susan B. Ford Distinguished Fellow at the Hoover Institution and the Jack Steele Parker Professor of International Economics at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
He was awarded the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, on January 19, 1989. He also received the Seoul Peace Prize (1992), the Eisenhower Medal for Leadership and Service (2001), and the Reagan Distinguished American Award (2002). He is the recipient of the Elliot Richardson Prize for Excellence and Integrity in Public Service, The James H. Doolittle Award, and the John Witherspoon Medal for Distinguished Statesmanship. The George Shultz National Foreign Service Training Center in Arlington, Virginia, was dedicated on May 29, 2002. Shultz as named a Distinguished Fellow of the American Economic Association in 2005.
