SAN JOSE, Calif., Jul. 11, 2007 /PRNewswire/ -- SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ: SPWR), a Silicon Valley-based manufacturer of high-efficiency solar cells, solar panels and solar systems, today announced that it is the first solar panel manufacturer worldwide to qualify for and receive the new International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61730 safety standards certificate from TUV Rheinland Group for its solar panels. This certificate confirms that SunPower has met the stringent construction requirements set forth by the IEC certification board, in close cooperation with United Laboratories (UL), to provide for the safe electrical and mechanical operation of its solar panels during their expected lifetime.

TUV Rheinland Group is the leading international technical service provider, implementing the toughest independent testing and performance standards on the market today. The IEC 61730 certificate addresses the prevention of electrical shock, fire hazards, and personal injury due to mechanical and environmental stresses to the solar panel. It also specifies particular construction requirements and is considered an upgrade to the IEC 61215 certificate, edition 2, that was earned by SunPower in the Spring of 2006.
